École kā-iskonākwahk School information

Name Update

As we prepare to welcome students and families to École kā-iskonākwahk School, we are pleased to share a small but meaningful refinement to the school's name. Following final consultation with divisional Language Keepers, Elders, and the Manitoba Office of Indigenous Excellence, the spelling has been updated to more accurately reflect the Cree language and the intended meaning of the name. While the spelling has changed, the spirit and significance of the name remain the same. Emerging first through community voice, and later refined through the guidance of Language Keepers, Elders, and Indigenous language experts, kā-iskonākwahk reflects a shared vision for this new school community. The name is both the culmination of a collective journey, and the beginning of a school identity rooted in belonging, connection, hope, and possibility.

Pronunciation: ka-is-KO-nah-kwak

École kā-iskonākwahk School is a new school coming to the Prairie Pointe neighbourhood in southwest Winnipeg. The school will include classroom spaces, a gymnasium, a multipurpose room, specialized learning areas to support hands-on programming, and an attached daycare. It will also include resource, guidance and student support spaces, human ecology, life skills and a hygiene room, library learning commons, a kitchenette, applied technology spaces, and associated administrative, ancillary, and building support areas.

kā-iskonākwahk is the Ininîmowin (Cree) word meaning “as far as the eye can see”. It is rooted in the teaching of the Seven Generations and reminds us to honour the past and the future, while representing living in good relationship with the land, where hope, possibility, and connection extend as far as the eye can see.
