Library Learning Commons
At Henry G. Izatt, we are working to embed technology and student voice in order to increase student engagement. Our school Library Learning Commons has evolved over time to support these goals through programming, arrangement of physical space, the addition of a Makerspace and flexible scheduling.
The Library Learning Commons at HGI Middle School is a constant hub of activity. In addition to our diverse collection of books and audio books, we are fortunate to have a room which houses a 3D Printer, Sphero Robots, Ozobots, a Cricut Cutter and Arduino/Raspberry Pi components. We also have a general craft Makerspace area where students can access a number of different activities including coding, Lego Mindstorm Robots, Snap circuit kits as well as supplies for finger knitting and scrapbooking.
The Library Learning Commons provides support for print-based literacy, inquiry, information fluency, digital literacy and digital citizenship. A focused effort is made to encourage creative and critical use of technology. As part of this process, we have a Student Technology Leadership group, which discusses issues around technology use in our own school and that has also been invited to speak at numerous schools, conferences and events in Winnipeg and the surrounding area.
