At Whyte Ridge School, we collaborate in developing an inclusive school community where all children are included, supported, nurtured and appreciated. The Student Support team consists of the School Administration, resource, counselling, Reading Recovery and English as an Additional Language

ResourceResource

Our Resource Teacher assists the Classroom Teachers in academic planning and supports for children who require planning beyond the classroom. The services are designed with strong pedagogy based practices such as collaborative planning, co-teaching, small group instruction and individual support.

The Resource Teacher collaborates with teachers and families to develop Individual Education Plans for children with Special Needs. They support and provide programming that meet the needs of students.

Counselling    Counselling

The counselling program at Whyte Ridge is available to all kindergarten to grade four students. The primary goal of the program is to support and assist students in developing their optimal individual potential, socially, emotionally and academically. Students are taught how to develop and maintain appropriate social skills, which will enhance their interpersonal relationships and improve self-awareness and self-esteem.

The counselling program offers both developmental and intervention programs such as Roots of Empathy, Have you Filled a Bucket Today and Kelso's Problem Solving. Topics such as self-esteem, anger managements, decision-making, responsibility, personal safety, bullying, problem solving, how to cope with fears and anxieties and various other skills are directly taught to the students in a variety of ways. Small group work and individual counselling is done on an as needed basis.

Reading RecoveryReading Recovery

Reading Recovery™ is offered in our school to students in grade one and is a highly effective short-term intervention of one-on-one tutoring for struggling first grade readers and writers.

In Reading Recovery™, individual students receive a half-hour lesson each school day for 12 to 20 weeks with a specially trained Reading Recovery™ teacher. When students read and write within the average range of their class and demonstrate that they can continue to achieve, their lessons are discontinued.

At home, the parents share the child's daily accomplishments through fifteen minutes of reading familiar texts and reassembling a cut-up story. Once discontinued, the child is monitored on a regular basis by the Reading Recovery teacher and the classroom teacher.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

EAL

Whyte Ridge is proud of its vibrant and growing English as an Additional Language (EAL) program. We host approximately 80 students speaking mother tongues such as Russian, Tagalog, Punjabi, Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Farsi, Hebrew, Spanish, Mandarin and Cantonese to name a few.

Supports are offered to students who are newcomers to Canada whose first language is other than English, also to students born in Canada whose home language is other than English as well. There may be other circumstances that qualify a student for support but will be investigated on a case my case basis.

Support is offered directly by the EAL Specialist or by an Educational Assistant with the student individually or working in small groups.

There are many Community organizations offering support to families who are new to Canada who are learning the English Language. Resources such as The Winnipeg Public Library and local churches offer a variety of support to new families.
