Pembina Trails is one step closer to opening a new high school

The wait may soon be over. Premier Brian Pallister and Education and Training Minister Ian Wishart have announced a request for proposal to build four new schools in four different divisions, including an English high school in Pembina Trails.

The province has put out a request for proposal (RFP) to possibly build the new schools through a Public Private Partnership (P3). Officials with the government of Manitoba will study the benefits of a Public Private Partnership approach to see if the four school $100 million dollar project is suitable. Manitoba Education and Training and the Public School Finance Board identified a grade 9-12 high school in Waverley West as one of the top priorities. The school would be able to accommodate 1,200 students and be roughly 125,087 square feet in size. The proposed location is in Bridgwater near the Town Centre south of Bison Drive and east of Kenaston Boulevard northbound.

"Pembina Trails School Division is filled with gratitude today," shared Superintendent Ted Fransen. "This high school will serve the Bridgwater, South Pointe and Prairie Pointe communities. It would create much needed learning spaces for the hundreds of students who are currently in overcrowded high schools and the many more that will make Waverley West their home. We appreciate the fact that the province of Manitoba has recognized the immediate and future need for more classrooms."

Superintendent Ted Fransen and our Chair of the Board of Trustees Julie Fisher were on hand for the exciting announcement. The province says the goal will be to break ground in 2019.
