Literacy

From Manitoba Education and Training curriculum:

"Within the last two decades, English language arts educators have expanded the understanding of English language arts instruction. At all grades, the focus is on acquiring language and literacy skills through listening, speaking, viewing, and representing, as well as reading and writing. In keeping with the literacy demands placed on them, students now learn to read and produce a wide range of texts, including media, transactional, and literary texts."

At Oakenwald School, we have daily literacy block time to allow for cross grade guided reading and writing. We have a part-time Reading Recovery teacher who focuses on improving the reading and writing skills of grade one students. English as an Additional Language (EAL) programming is supported through both individual and small group connections. Many teachers use the guided reading approach in early years, and Daily 5/Café approach in middle years. All teachers use Fountas and Pinnell assessments to determine reading and comprehension levels for students.
