At HGI, we are proud of our diverse community of learners. We welcome our growing number of newcomer students as well as host international students from all over the world!
Newcomer Family Reception:
If your family has recently arrived in Canada (within the past six months), please follow these steps to register your child at school:
- Contact the International Student Program office at: 204.488.1767 Ext. 1225
- Book an appointment to confirm your address and immigration status
- An EAL teacher will meet with you and your student and conduct an initial interview to ensure the best academic program
English as an Additional Language (EAL) Program:
Our EAL Program provides students with a variety of language opportunities to improve their English, make new friends in many grade levels as well as participate in school events/clubs/sport teams throughout the year.
These programs include:
- Canada Group (students in their first and second year of being in Canada)
- Daily support for students in their first year in Canada
- Regular support as needed for students in years two to four
- Newcomer Nights
- English Language Acquisition Plans (ELAPS) are in place to facilitate appropriate programming for each English Language Learner
Interpreters:
Interpreters are scheduled for families who require support at tri-conferences when student academic progress is shared. Our website also has a button to translate the content in to many different languages.
Newcomer Nights:
The purpose of the meetings are to:
- Give parents information about school, school life, school events and activities
- Share information about Life in Canada as it relates to food, clothing, weather, education, etc.
- Make community connections (Settlement worker, Whyte Ridge Baptist)
- Provide opportunities for families to connect with each other, make friends, share supports
- Sharing information about report cards, how our educational system works, providing them with interpreters, giving them personal support with any issues or concerns
- Make connections with a trusted adult in the building, giving them access to information at their English level
