École Viscount Alexander offers in-school support services to assist students in developing strategies for a successful future. The in-school support services include Resource and counselling.
Resource Teacher
The resource teacher’s function, as a member of the School Support Team, is to provide assistance to classroom teachers in differentiating instruction for all students and in developing appropriate educational programming for students with special needs. Some responsibilities include:
To facilitate assessment and support the staff in development and implementation of inclusive whole class instructional practices
To facilitate and provide individual, diagnostic assessment to determine specific educational and programming needs for students with learning challenges
To observe and assess, record and collaborate in programming for students with cognitive, social and emotional, behavioral and physical challenges
To facilitate and collaborate in the development of plans involving school-based, divisional and inter-agency personnel
To provide and/or coordinate direct services for students requiring supportive or individualized programming
Counselling
As part of the student services team, the primary goal of the school counsellor is to enhance and promote student learning. School guidance and counselling services are designed to facilitate the educational, personal, social and emotional development of students in schools and in the community. The school counsellor’s functions may include:
Facilitating transition to high school; help with course selections
Collaborating with teachers on the delivery of curricula related to personal, social, healthy lifestyle management, study skills & organization, time management skills
Individual counselling (self-esteem building, anger management, behaviour management, stress management)
Small group counselling (friendships, conflict resolution, bully proofing, anxiety, anger)
Grief/loss/separation & divorce
Referrals or assistance with referrals to appropriate outlets (inside and outside of the school setting)
Peer helping programs (leadership group)
Consultation with parents, teachers, divisional clinical services
Students may be referred to counseling by teacher, parent or administrator request. Children may also self-refer.
Classroom observations, meetings, and the development of Individual Collaborative Plans are also part of the counselling program. The counsellor works in collaboration with parents, teachers, the school and divisional support teams to meet the social, emotional, behavioral and intellectual needs of each child to maximize their learning potential.
Divisional Clinicians
We also have divisional clinicians who consult with our Student Support Service team regularly. Due to limited time, clinicians work with students on a priority basis.
